User accounts in self-administration – Test of IDM-Portal
The German magazine for professional system and network administration, IT-Administrator, published an in-depth review of our IAM solution FirstWare IDM-Portal in its August 08/2022 issue. In 5 pages, the article describes a practical test of the IDM-Portal, ranging from the implementation to the use of the portal. Here you can find the link to the article Test of FirstWare IDM-Portal Professional (as pdf file, in German language only).
In summary, the author Dr. Christian Knermann, IT-Administrator, writes:
“FirstWare IDM-Portal simplifies user management in Microsoft Active Directory – also hybrid in connection with Entra ID. The portal helps admins delegate typical tasks or empower users themselves in self-service.
IT-Administrator took a look at the solution in practice and was impressed by its flexibility.“
Assessed are in particular:
- Role concept
- Configurator and templates
- PowerShell interface
- Approvals
- Time control
In addition to a look at the various editions of IDM-Portal, the paper also looks at the system requirements and implementation of the portal.
Single point of contact for administrators, business departments and end users
The strength of IDM-Portal lies in the fact that it separates Identity & Access Management from IT and also makes it accessible to non-IT employees.
“The basic idea of the portal is to standardize the entry and maintenance of user master data and to delegate it as much as required. […]
Instead of just specialists […] the portal with its web interface wants to act as a single point of contact for administrators as well as specialist departments and the users themselves.” (IT Administrator, 08/2022)
Due to a granular role concept, views, tasks and permissions can be delegated and automated exactly for a user group. This simplifies many tasks for IT.
“This means that granular access rights can be mapped within the company. Almost every possible role gets access to the AD that is tailored exactly to its needs, can make its adjustments in self-service and relieve the IT admins.” (IT-Administrator, 08/2022)
At the same time, time-consuming redundant maintenance of employee data in different systems is reduced. Security is increased through automation and approval workflows. Finally, detailed logging and reporting provides additional traceability.
