AD group management is an important function in Active Directory. When a new user account is created, it becomes a member of at least one and sometimes several groups. These groups are distinguished by certain access rights and permissions. FirstWare IDM-Portal offers a well-structured web interface through which you can set up, move or delete groups in a simple manner. There are several ways to administer group memberships, either directly within a user’s profile, or in the ‘Groups’ section. Additionally, there is an option to save valuable information about your groups.
With FirstWare IDM-Portal you can create groups with just a few mouse clicks. When setting up groups you can include new members straight away without having to click through menus and sub-folders in the AD Users and Computers console.

In IDM-Portal, you can get all your AD group management tasks done without using native AD tools.
In the section ‘Groups’ you can create new groups by simply choosing the AD Organizational Unit where your group is to be located.
Then select those employees who you want to add as members of the group. You can also remove users by using the ‘drag and drop’ function.
Group memberships can also be assigned directly within a user’s profile.
Select the relevant group(s) and ‘drag and drop’ the selected groups into the user’s profile.
FirstWare IDM-Portal is ideally suited to delegate the management of groups to non-IT-employees (e.g. team leaders or the HR department). Depending on the user’s role and permissions, they can add and remove members as well as create and edit groups. Windows does not offer a user-friendly front end tool for normal users to manage department groups. However, with IDM-Portal, group and user management tasks can be delegated and do not need to be exclusively in the hands of IT admins anymore.
The attribute ‘department’ is one of the standard fields in the ‘Create User’ profile. By using a .csv file, the ‘department’ field displays a dropdown menu from which the relevant department can be chosen.
Simultaneously, the user is automatically becoming a member of the department group.
The IDM-Portal provides the option to create groups and organise them in categories, e.g. file share, organisational and proxy groups. Administrators can filter and narrow their search by selecting a category, such as ‘OG-Group’ or ‘FS-Group’. At the end, the search results are easier to read and relevant groups are found much faster than without using a filter.
