More and more employees were becoming members, while only a few were leaving the groups &#8211; for example, trainees who were registered in various groups. This resulted in security-relevant <strong>excessive permissions that could become problematic during audits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the annual review and documentation of group memberships had to be carried out efficiently and in an audit-proof manner. The previous, self-developed system was no longer able to meet these requirements, especially since the employee responsible had left the company. Complete traceability via log files was also required to ensure ISO compliance.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udce9 The customer approached us with the request to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide a service that automates these checks,<\/li>\n<li>documents them in an audit-proof manner, and<\/li>\n<li>can be flexibly adapted to the company&#8217;s requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our-solution-A-service-for-annual-recertification\"><\/span>Our solution: A service for annual recertification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To ensure ISO-compliant testing, we developed our own service based on .NET. It works as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The service registers on a server and regularly reads the group memberships.<\/li>\n<li>During the audit, the current status is compared with the original composition of the group.<\/li>\n<li>All members are automatically set to approval status.<\/li>\n<li>The respective group manager then has 28 days to confirm or remove the memberships.<\/li>\n<li>If no confirmation is received, the member is consistently removed from the group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The test cycle can also be flexibly adjusted via a small configuration file, for example from annually to semi-annually.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benefits-of-the-recertification-service\"><\/span>Benefits of the recertification service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udc4d Individual configurability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A key feature of the recertification service is its <strong>high degree of flexibility in configuration<\/strong>. Different groups can be assigned their own test cycles. For example, <strong>administration groups <\/strong>can be recertified <strong>every six months<\/strong> and <strong>normal groups annually<\/strong>. The distinction is made quite simply on the basis of defined naming conventions, such as the prefix \u201cADM&#8230;\u201d. In this way, companies can simultaneously define <strong>different check intervals for different group types<\/strong> and also control exactly <strong>which groups are included in the checks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udc4d Notification features<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition, particular emphasis was placed on the <strong>notification functions<\/strong>. After the review period has expired, a <strong>final results report<\/strong> is also sent. This makes the annual recertification process for group owners not only efficient, but also particularly <strong>user-friendly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"imgshadow alignnone wp-image-49180 size-full\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1-300x51.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1-1024x173.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1-768x130.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.firstware.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Automation-Service-IDM-Portal-2048x346-1-1536x260.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Project-challenges-and-special-features\"><\/span>Project challenges and special features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There were several technical and organizational challenges involved in implementing the recertification service to check group memberships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The service had to communicate reliably with the existing Active Directory and our automation service without disrupting existing processes.<\/li>\n<li>All changes to group memberships had to be logged completely so that ISO compliance could be verified at any time.<\/li>\n<li>The audit cycle should not be rigid, but should be adaptable to different company requirements (e.g., annual or semi-annual audits).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An important step was a \u201cproof of concept\u201d and a gradual introduction: First, feasibility was tested with a small PowerShell script before the dedicated service was fully developed and put into production.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators and IT managers were involved at an early stage to set up the service in a practical manner and ensure acceptance by all parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>These measures ensured that the service is not only functional, but also reliable and easy to maintain in productive operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2705 The service is now productive and successfully in use by the customer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Result\"><\/span>Result<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to automation, the annual recertification of group memberships is now secure, traceable, and audit-proof.
